In today’s assembly, Mrs Beer explained that this term, Bishop Patrick wants us to focus on how we encounter Christ.

We talked about what the word “encounter” means. Suggestion included: to meet, to come face to face with, to accidentally come across. Artomas told us that in a religious sense, it means to spend time with God.

We thought about the different ways in which we encounter Christ in school. The children talked about: during Mass and liturgies, when we pray, when we sing. Zuzia said that we encounter Christ all of the while because he is always with us, guiding us to do the right thing.

We heard this scripture:

Above everything, love one another earnestly, because love covers over many sins. Open your homes to each other without complaining.

1 Peter 4:8-9

We watched the video to the song “Be our Guest” from the film “Beauty and the Beast”. It showed us how to make others feel welcome – just how Belle was made to feel welcome by the characters in the castle.

Similarly, Jesus always welcomed others – no matter if they were sick, hungry or outcasts like the tax collectors. We should be like Jesus and welcome others without prejudice.

Mrs Beer set each class a Mission: to create a welcome poster to go on their classroom door to welcome visitors. Each class must choose a piece of scripture to go on their poster.

Here are the finished posters!

Why did your class choose that particular piece of scripture? Tell us in the comments below.

Year 4 have chosen Galatians 5:14 as their welcome quote.

For the whole law is summed up in one commandment: “Love your neighbour as you love yourself.”

We chose this this piece of scripture because it reminds us that we should treat everyone as we would like to be treated. To make all feel welcome and happy in our school.

Year 3 have chosen their piece of scripture as Romans 15:7 because it’s about saying ‘hello’ to someone that is new to our school. It is welcoming and we thought that it depicted how Jesus welcomed us into his life through his thoughts and his actions.

Year 5 have chosen Luke 14: 12-14. We have chosen this piece of scripture because it made us think about everyone single person that is around us, not just our own family and friends. We decided that when we think about and encounter others and what we can do for them, we become better people and will be rewarded for this kindness in the eyes of God.

In year 6 we chose Hebrews 13:2 that reminds us to be welcoming to everyone as we never know when we are entertaining angels. We liked this scripture as it reminded us that everyone is part of God’s family and everyone is special and deserving of our love and respect. God loves us all so we should make sure we extend that to others as well and treat everyone we encounter with kindness, not just our friends.

Year 1 have chosen Philemon1: 17 as their welcome quote

“So, if you think of me as your partner, welcome him back just as you would welcome me”

We chose this piece of scripture because it reminds us that Jesus welcomed people with an open heart and he wants us to be like him. We talked about kindness and making people feel loved within our school and the wider community.

    Year 2 have chosen Roman12:18
Do everything possible on your part to live in peace with everybody.
We chose this piece of scripture as it reminded us to be peace givers by forgiving and being compassionate.
