This week, Mrs Beer introduced our word of the week: ‘giving’.
The children were able to give lots of examples of what giving means in terms of both giving physical items such as food and toys as well as giving invisible gifts such as love and kindness.
We heard this scripture reading:
A Reading from the second letter of
St Paul to the Corinthians
You should each give, then, as you have decided, not with regret or out of a sense of duty; for God loves the one who gives gladly. And God is able to give you more than you need, so that you will always have all you need for yourselves and more than enough for every good cause. As the scripture says,
“He gives generously to the needy; his kindness lasts forever.”
2 Corinthians 9:7-9
Mrs Beer picked out the word “gladly” and asked the children what this means. They said that it means that you want to give – you don’t just do it because you are told to!
We then watched a short video clip from the film Paddington and children were asked to look out for when someone was giving.
They correctly said that Mary was giving when she offered to give Paddington a home. They said that she was giving love and kindness and her time.
The children were given this week’s mission: to be a disciple of Jesus by giving something to someone in need.
They gave lots of examples of what they could do:
- Give someone a smile and therefore give kindness and happiness
- Give someone a hand with their school work
- Put an item of food in the Foodbank collection bin at the school office
- Give old toys or clothes to charity
- Give money to CAFOD
We ended in prayer:
Dear Lord,
Thank you for providing me with everything I need: a safe place to sleep, enough food to eat, a great school where I can learn and friends and adults who care for me, support me and love me.
Help me to recognise when others need something. Help me to be generous with what I have and to share with those in need.
Help me to be as giving as Jesus was.
Amen
Let us know how you achieve this week’s mission in the comments below.

In Year 1, we talked about giving and why it is good to be a giver. We read the scripture about the poor widow who gave all she had and we talked about ways we can give. We learnt and sang the hymn, God loves a cheerful giver.
Year 3 talked earlier on this week about ways they could give to others and how the gift of giving makes them feel happy. The children have given hugs to a parent if they seemed sad or if they were feeling sick. They have given money to the poor, helped someone when they’ve fallen in the playground and shared their toys. We talked about the importance of giving, not just of material things, but of ourselves, our time and our love.
In year 5, we remembered the time we picked what we wanted to buy for others in need. We remembered that we chose to give a mosquito net and chickens. We found a scripture linked to giving and used this in our own class liturgy. The scripture was ‘It is better to give than to recieve’ Acts 20:35. We also spoke about giving our love, respect and forgiveness to those who need it.
In Year 4 we talked about how we could be giving and live out the scripture. We said we could give to food bank and those who have less than us as God wants us all to be equal. We also said we could give to each other in class, by giving time, listening, friendship to those that had no-one to play with and giving help to those who needed it. We also showed that we were giving by giving support to Mrs Kotarba when she lost her voice, we gave our attention so we could hear and learn and we gave our love by making a get well card from us all.
