Mission: to create an opportunity for someone else to encounter God this week

The theme of this week’s Mission Act of Worship was Missionary Discipleship. We heard how this means that we should share the Good News of our faith through both our words, but more importantly, our actions.

We heard this scripture extract:

There are other sheep which belong to me that are not in this sheep pen. I must bring them, too; they will listen to my voice, and they will become one flock with one shepherd.

John 10:16

As Missionary Disciples, we should encourage others to encounter Christ, to share our faith, to join Jesus’ flock.

You could:

  • Write a prayer to pray with your family or friends
  • Meditate with others
  • Pray with your friends at lunchtime
  • Make and decorate a prayer card and give it to someone who needs God’s support and love
  • Invite someone to go to Mass with you
  • Show compassion and kindness to another, explaining that you do this as this is what Jesus would have done

Your mission therefore is to create an opportunity for someone else to encounter God this week. Let us know in the comments below how you achieve this week’s mission.

When year 5 discussed this week’s mission back in the classroom, they had remembered that missionary discipleship was one of the key aims that Bishop Patrick Mckinney outlined for the Nottignham Diocese. We looked back at a quote from our Bishop:

“Missionary Discipleship means I must open my heart to God’s love & His will in daily prayer, be willing to serve Christ as His disciple, & be attentive to the guidance & inspiration of the Holy Spirit in my word & actions. One way in which I live this out is in meeting with other Christian Leaders to explore ways in which we can pray & work together, and with Leaders of other faiths so that we can grow in mutual respect & better understanding of each other.”

We discussed that we could follow in these footsteps and be closer to God through ‘Encouter’.

In Year 4 we used the theme of Missionary discipleship in our class liturgy. We listened to the example of Jesus helping the blind beggar form Luke and discussed how we could show kindness and love to those in need of seeing Jesus in their lives. We also each had the opportunity to pray for someone in our families or the wider community. A lot of Year 4 prayed for those in the Ukraine and that leaders will make wise choices to keep everyone safe. Finally we decided that our mission would be to show compassion and kindness to another, explaining that this is what Jesus would have done.

This week in Year 4 we have put in to action be missionary disciples. We have taken our prayer box outside and written prayers that we have then shared and read with our friends. We have taken part in meditation sharing the pictures, thoughts and words that God has given us. We have written prayers for our class assembly which we will say with the whole school. We have also invited the school family in to share with our prayers and thoughts.

As part of Bishop Patrick’s theme of missionary discipleship we are all called to go out into the world and spread the Good News, helping others to encounter God in their lives. To live this out we said we could teach our friends from different schools some of our favourite prayers and hymns, and encourage our extended families to join us in church.
