Year 1 and 2 went to daily Mass at St Francis Church, our convent chapel. They had the chance to see all of the signs and symbols in the church and to spend time in prayer with people from the parish and with our parish sisters. The children were excited because, owing to the COVID restrictions, they have not had the opportunity to take part in daily Mass and it really helps to build the links between the school and the parish.
During Mass, we prayed for a local priest who had died and spent some quiet time thinking about those we love who had died and who we hope and pray are in Heaven with God. The children were given a blessing by Fr Tom, who explained that in Year 3 they would have the opportunity to make their First Communion.
The children discussed their thoughts and feelings afterwards. “I loved seeing the Holy Spirit above the Altar.” “I liked saying prayers for people and seeing what the altar looked like.” “The sisters said some special prayers but I wondered why we didn’t sing songs like we do in school Masses.” “I’m really looking forward to making my First Communion so I can go to communion in Mass.”
They were respectful and reverent during Mass and one of the parishioners kindly came to the school office to compliment the behaviour and attitude of the children, which she said had enhanced her experience of the daily Mass. We are looking forward to going to Mass again soon.
