This morning during assembly, the Junior children were joined by Fr John Cahill to learn the chants used in Mass taken from the Roman Missal.
Fr John explained to us that the chants are sung spoken word, sung in such a way that it draws us closer into a state of prayer. The chants can be tricky to learn as there are no beats in the music, but rather, follow a natural pattern of intonation.
This morning, the children learnt the Preface sung responses as well as the Holy Holy and the Lamb of God. Fr John got the children standing up on their feet to project their voices and well as following the pitch of their singing to match the musical notes.
Fr John wanted to run an assembly on the music from the missal so that children attending Mass on Sundays use the same sung responses both at home and in the parish. Next week, we are going to give the chants a try in our Y6 and Y2 joint mass. Parents are most welcome to join us for this mass in the Junior Hall at 2.15pm.
