Feast of Christ the King
Sunday 20th November 2022 – Feast Day Family Mass in Blessed Sacrament Parish
Wednesday 23rd November 2022 – Junior Liturgy
At the weekend, our school community came together to celebrate the Feast of Christ the King in our local parish, Blessed Sacrament. The mass was celebrated by Fr John Cahill who praised the pupils for coming to mass in their school uniform and also for reading scripture and bidding prayers so confidently and clearly. Here are the bidding prayers read out at mass this week:
1. For Pope Francis and Bishop Patrick: That their preaching and example may encourage us to stand firm as witnesses of Christ the King.
2. For all who serve in government: That they will work to establish justice and peace for all.
3. For vocations to the priesthood and religious life: That God may send workers to build up the Kingdom of God in our diocese.
4. For married people: That God will help them to reflect God’s love of God’s Kingdom in the world.
5. For all young people: That God will reign in their hearts and minds.
6. For all who have died, especially those on our November lists, and especially for Mary Flaherty for whom this Mass if offered in particular: That they may inherit the Kingdom of God.
Lord Hear Us R. Lord, Graciously Hear Us.
On Wednesday in school, our Junior Chaplaincy team led a liturgy asking the children to think Jesus as a King; he is not a king with jewels, and servants and a fancy palace. He is a King of kindness and love, mercy and forgiveness.
The Gospel chosen was Jesus’ Greatest Commandment: to love one another. This is how we get into God’s kingdom: by following his example. We, as Christians, are all called to build God’s Kingdom here on earth in how we treat one another; in what we do and what we say. The children were asked to reflect if Jesus is more a King of their hearts this year than last, and how they have done this past year at following Jesus’ example.
As they thought about this, a member of each class added a Lego brick to a Kingdom of God built by the chaplains, to show that we all play a part in making God’s Kingdom a reality. The children took away a brick template; their mission was to write on the template how they could build the Kingdom of God here on earth today, and to begin building this Kingdom in their prayer areas in classrooms and how they act towards one another.

6DM enjoyed completing their mission and it helped us with our RE task later that day!
We used our bricks to remind us of the expectations placed on us as Christians before taking part in a debate about whether those expectations are too much or not!
We decided that the expectations were not a burden because, as Children of God, acting in the way that Jesus modelled is part of our lives and behaviours like kindness, justice and charity soon become good habits or virtues! We also thought that the reward of God’s Kingdom, on earth or in heaven is entirely worth it!
Thank you Miss Dodd and chaplains for a liturgy which inspired our work and our actions!
