We often give up things for Lent but fasting is not just about going without chocolate. It’s about going without something you don’t need in order to focus on the things you do. You might fast from watching TV or going on your phone and therefore spending more time with your family and friends. What can you give up for Lent that will help you understand the really important things in your life?
Mission: Can you give up some of your time this week to help others?
You could:
• use some of your time at break or lunch to see if there is anyone looking lonely or upset and ask if they want to talk
• take the time to help a teacher with their bags or to tidy up after a lesson
• help catering site staff by picking up any rubbish you see in the canteen this week.
• help out at home with siblings or housework.

This week, we have been thinking about the theme of ‘fasting’. In Y6B, the children have been able to identify lots of times where we have been able to give up our time to help others. This has included helping at home with the cleaning, cooking and washing up. Children have also helped in the recent unseasonal weather, clearing the snow from family cars. In school, children have helped others to make the right choices as well as supporting their peers with their learning (including operating a micro:bit). The children also recognised the importance of stopping and taking time to ask others about their day or occupying younger siblings.
This week, we looked at the ways in which we could give up our time to help others as a way of remembering Jesus’ time in the wilderness and saying thank you to God. Through discussion in our Mission Circles, the children thought of some amazing examples of how they could give up their time to help others. Their examples included helping their teacher, praying for someone in need, giving money to charity and spending more time with their family and friends.
