Our chaplaincy teams lead moving services on Friday in remembrance of those who gave their lives in service of our country. We also remember all those who have gone before us to Heaven during the month of November.
The chaplains chose sombre hymns including ‘Be Not Afraid’ and explained that as Christians, we should not be afraid when someone passes, but should instead thank God that He will welcome them into Heaven and hold them in the palm of His hand. The children chose icons representing this to add to our prayer focus.
During the day, all pupils observed two minutes silence at 11am and we said a quiet prayer for all the soldiers who have lost their lives and their families. Our poppy sales were very successful this year, selling out midweek. We are currently counting how much has been raised for Help for Heroes. All pupils decorated a paper poppy each and these were used to decorate the cross in remembrance of the lives lost.
Our junior chaplains chose to include two poems in their liturgy that they remembered from previous years learning about Armistice Day. They decided to perform these poems chorally as class members laid poppy wreaths at the foot of the cross. These poems were then handed out to pupils as part of their mission: to share the poems with their families and light a candle in memory of the servicemen and women who have died.
