We would like to thank you for joining us today for Miss Gilding’s class poetry recital. Poetry recitals help to strengthen our memory of the range of poetry that we have studied over the years.
Reading poetry allows the children to consider their voice, pitch, volume and inflection to express feeling and emotion. It also takes us to places that we would never normally experience, allowing us to expand our vocabulary!
The first poem shared was ‘The Eagle’ by Lord Tennyson in 1851 and is his shortest poem. Tennyson was influenced by the Romantic period and created poetry to fit in with this genre. This poem allowed the children to consider nature’s power and strength. As the poem is so short, the class experimented with different dynamics: volume, pitch and pace. 6EG chose to adapt their volume and repeat the poem both loudly and softly for effect on the listener.
The second poem was ‘Dis Poetry’ by Benjamin Zephaniah, one of our Year 6 authors of the month. Benjamin Zephaniah has spoken openly throughout the years about his academic struggles and diagnosis of dyslexia. He strives to break down barriers and is an inspiration to us all: if we truly want to achieve something, we can do it. Zephaniah wrote ‘Dis Poetry’ with his Jamaican accentuation visually and acoustically in full focus to allow the reader and audience to experience his message. The poem is about being able to create literary art without any restrictions in order for it to be an authentic representation of the author.

What did you enjoy?
– Oscar enjoyed learning ‘Dis Poetry’ because it was fun to learn some modern poetry!
– Faustina enjoyed learning ‘The Eagle’ and liked how we used different volume to perform it.
– Elisha enjoyed ‘Dis Poetry’ because of how Benjamin Zephaniah had written it with his Jamaican accent acoustically in full focus which made it really fun to learn!
– Charlotte enjoyed learning the song because the message was that everyone is different, but we should celebrate that and be who we want to be.
– Manny enjoyed singing the song, especially when we split into boys and girls and created an echo.
What value has learning poetry by heart added to you?
– Amadis said it has helped her to learn long poetry that she would never have learnt otherwise.
– Mateusz said that at the beginning, he thought it would be impossible to learn ‘Dis Poetry’ off by heart, but it has shown him that anything is possible!
– Alexa said it has helped her to share poetry with people around her that weren’t able to come on the day by reciting it to them.
– Marlon said he learnt that if you are patient and keep practising, you can achieve anything.
– Chinani said performing it chorally allowed her to recite the poem more confidently, focusing on how she recited rather than worrying about doing it alone.
What could we improve about our poetry recitals for the future? / what advice would you give to the next class for their recital?
– Daisy said that we could have improved our own poetry recital by ensuring that everyone sang enthusiastically throughout.
– Divine said the next class should consider where they stand when reciting the poem so that everyone can be seen.
– Mateusz said the next class should perform with a loud, clear voice and a smile on their face!
