Today we enjoyed a fantastic performance by Mrs Stone’s class who performed two poems: ‘Invictus’ by William Ernest Henley and ‘The Owl and the Pussy cat’ by Edward Lear.
Henley wrote Invictus in the 18th Century while he was in hospital after getting a leg amputated and, although it sounds sombre, his poem is his way of showing hope and bravery in his suffering, no matter the circumstance.
The Owl and the Pussycat is a playful poem, written about a fictional place that has no sorrow or suffering. The main themes are joy and love. This is a poem the children learned in Year 2 during their poetry unit and so it has brought back fond memories for them.
We hope you enjoyed the children’s interpretation of the two poems.

All the children were in good spirit. Really enjoyed myself. All the children were in harmony. Very encouraging to see the school giving such opportunity to the students to boost their confidence.
What did you enjoy?
RM: I enjoyed doing ‘The owl and the Pussycat’ and the song.
KF: I enjoyed doing the body percussion.
OU: I enjoyed the song as well especially doing the round.
MD: I enjoyed doing the actions for Invictus.
What value has learning poetry by heart added to you?
LM: It has made me more confident in public speaking.
JP: This has made me feel a lot more confident than when we did plays and it has taught me to become more expressive.
MO: It has shown us that if we put our minds to something, we can achieve it.
What could we improve about our poetry recitals for the future? / what advice would you give to the next class for their recital?
BH: Next time we should all start at the same time.
KU: Try and learn the poems first and then see what you need to do to make it better.
AA: Next time, we could make ourselves louder.
EM: Next time, we could smile more and be more energetic.
