This week our theme is giving. In reflecting on our theme, we can be inspired by the life of Martin de Tours whose memorial we celebrate this week (11th November). He is famous for literally cutting his cloak to give to someone in need. His ability to be generous and to look after those around him can inspire us all. Think this week about how you can give to others – what do the people around you need?

In Reception, we spoke about how we might give to others and some of the ideas that we thought of were: sharing, give a hug, give a wave, give a smile, hold hands and if you have old shoes, you could give them to somebody else.
Year 2 children led a thoughtful liturgical prayer about the theme of Giving.
The liturgical leaders explained why they had included items on the prayer space and even added some Remembrance Day items because ‘the soldiers gave everything they had’. They then asked everyone to think about a time they had given to others. We then read the Gospel story from Luke ( Luke 21: 1-4 ). Here we heard the poor widow gave all the money she could even though she had very little. In our response to the word we discussed ways we can give, giving to the poor, donating toys, giving out time and love. The mission was to give to others. The children gave examples of how they could live out the mission such as ask a person who is lonely to play at lunchtime and look for ways to give your time like helping others or listening to them. We linked and made connections to our recent donations for haven’t and collecting money for CAFOD when we dressed in bright colours and donated 20p.
In Year 1, we thought about ways our school has given to other already and what we could do in the future. We discussed our reverse advent plans to gift bags of goodies to the homeless. We then thought of ways we could give to others. We came up with some amazing ideas such as: sharing, playing together, making a new friend, giving old toys, clothes and shoes to those who need them and giving some of your time such as listening to our friends and asking if they are okay.
In Year 6B, we have tried hard to give to others this week. This has included spending time with people who might otherwise be left out, giving encouragement to our team mates at the Football League matches, and giving toys or clothes that are no longer needed to charity. As part of our discussion of ‘giving’, one child also raised the importance of us giving time to praying and forgiving others. During Advent, we are being asked to bring in deodrant for our Reverse Advent Calendar so will continue to think about giving during this season.
