Mission: to make ‘One Little Switch’ to reduce our carbon footprint

In assembly today, Mrs Beer told us about tomorrow being Vegan Day.

We talked about what a vegan is and why being a vegan is a good choice for the environment.

We were shocked to find out how much CO2 is produced by us drinking milk and eating hamburgers and chicken!

Our school dinner menu tomorrow is going to be fully vegan and everyone is encouraged to bring a vegan packed lunch in too.

This is all aimed at trying to reduce St Clare’s carbon footprint in order to protect God’s Creation, the Earth.

We found out how much we could reduce our carbon footprint by if we just made “One Little Switch’ such as from cow’s milk to almond milk and from beef burgers to tofu burgers.

Your mission this week is therefore to make ‘One Little Switch’ to reduce your carbon footprint. Let us know in the comments how you get on.

In Year 4 we talked about what it would be like to give up meat, what we would miss the most. We made a list of the little changes we could make at home and what we could say to our families to persuade them to join in. In class those eating school dinners decided that they could choose the vegetarian option at least once week to support this.

Year 5 tried to make as many switches as possible on World Vegan Day. We discussed keeping our eyes open in shops for the ‘Vegan’ band name and try some of the products when we are next out shopping with parents. Trying a new crisp or a different cheese or maybe sweets or chocolate. We are excited to see how different/similar they taste and how many switches we can convince our family to make.

In year 3 we made as many switches as we could on World Vegan Day including enjoying the specially created Vegan lunch and ensuring that we had plant-based products in packed lunches like different types of fruit, jam sandwiches and much more.

In Year One, we really enjoyed Vegan day. We talked about how we can look after our world by making sure we pick up litter and by turning lights off when we leave a room.

In Year 6 we spoke about the easy swaps we could make to meals that help to reduce our carbon footprint. Lots of children said they would try a vegetable pasta dish or pizza topped with vegan cheese! We also spoke about other switches we could make such as the many different types of milk, vegan options of crisps and sweets and plant based meat alternatives. As well as enjoying vegan day in school, we said we would try to introduce these at home too.

In EYFS we talked about Vegan Day and how we would try and eat less meat and try other plant- based foods instead to try and look after our environment. The children also spoke about how we could try and walk to school instead of driving and why it is important to turn the lights off when we leave the classroom.
