This week, the Ecoteam led the school in a liturgy about Fairtrade Fortnight. They started by playing the hymn ‘We are one body in Christ’ to remind us that we are all part of one family and it’s our job to look after everyone else, no matter where they live. We guessed the topic of the liturgy by looking at the prayer focus, which contained fairtrade foods and drinks and cutout people holding hands to show that we are all linked together in the body of Christ. We watched the Fairtrade Fortnight video and discussed why fairtrade was important and how we could support it.
They chose the scripture Matthew 25 because it’s all about how Jesus wants us to treat others and links to the Corporal Works of Mercy. The message of the Gospel – whatever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters you do to me – is central to the importance of fairtrade and the decisions we make when we shop. Fairtrade is all about ensuring that people are paid a fair amount for the goods that they produce. When we make sure people are paid fairly, we are treating them as the scripture tells us.
Romee and Oliver asked us to think about choices that we can make in our lives to support fair trade. Nicola then led us in a prayer: Dear God, help us not to be greedy and to be grateful for what we have. Help us to always think about other people and make choices to benefit others.
Noah gave us our mission was to buy one fairtrade item when we go shopping instead of the item we normally buy.
