This week, Mrs Beer introduced us to the word “individuality”.
Some children had a good idea of what being an individual is: that we are all different – and that is a good thing!
We heard this Reading:
A Reading from the first letter of Samuel
But the Lord said to him, “Pay no attention to how tall and handsome he is. I have rejected him, because I do not judge as people judge. They look at the outward appearance, but I look at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7
We talked about how it is our personality – the things that we cannot see – which also makes us an individual: how we show kindness, how we say “hello” every morning, how we help others, how we look after one another, how we give up our time for others, how we are always happy to support others, how we smile at others and so on.
We prayed:
Dear Lord,
Thank you for making us all different – for our unique personalities, quirks, gifts and talents.
Help us to recognise that these differences make us special.
Help us to understand that our school community is richer due to these differences which You have blessed us with and to celebrate our individuality.
Amen
Your mission this week is to recognise the things that make us individuals. To praise someone for something you love about them that makes them an individual. Go up to someone and say, “I really like the way you…” or “I really like that you…”. Let’s spread a positive vibe across our school community by recognising the uniqueness of each and every one of us!

In Year 2, we started by examining our fingerprints and how unique they are; we moved on to our ears how incredibly different they are. We also looked at the way we walked and examined our great skulls. We played the compliments game and took it outside our classroom too. Today our challenge was to count the number of smiles we spread around our playground at playtime. We had a fun time making others smile. 🙂
In Year 3 we have been praising others for being them. Some children have praised each other for their beautiful earrings, others for being smart or always trying their best or helping others. The children praised Mrs Liddle in their English lesson by using adjectives to describe her. We talked about the importance of being an individual and about complimenting others for their individuality.
In Year 4 we have talked about how unique we all are and how that is important. The class decided it would be a very boring world if we were all the same. In RE we noticed that our scripture made reference to what God feels is important he said “They look at appearances and I look at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:4-13). We have praised people over the week for what they have done well and what they are uniquely good at for example Isla F’s amazing swimming.
In Year 1 we have talked about how God created everyone equally but not the same. We had a good discussion about how different we are and our uniqueness. We said a prayer to God and thanked God for creating us the way we are.
In year 5, we took the time to tell each other about our own personal skills and unique differences. We all understood the importance of listening and understanding each others differences. We thanked God for making us all different and unique.
In Year 6 we loved exploring the theme of individuality. In our class liturgy this week we reflected on the ‘One Body, Many Parts’ scripture and spoke about how we are all part of the same team, and all part of God’s family, but we all have different parts to play and different strengths to celebrate. To show this, we all tried to dance to the same song using the same steps and found this got quite boring. Then we had a go at dancing to the same song but showing our individual style in our moves which was much more interesting and fun- just like the world is a lot more interesting and fun when we are all individuals. We thanked God for our individuality and our special gifts and asked Him to help us always use them to help others.
