Mission: to stand up for those who are being treated unfairly

In today’s assembly, we thought about people in the Bible whom Jesus helped during a time when they were being treated unfairly.

Year 3 remembered how Jesus healed a blind man and we were reminded of the tax collectors that Jesus befirended from last week’s assembly on dignity.

We heard this reading from Luke’s Gospel where Jesus tells us one of the main reasons that God sent him to Earth.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

Glory to you, O Lord

Jesus went into the synagogue (church) to preach in his home town of Nazareth and said:

I have come to give news to the poor.

I have come to set free people who are being bullied.

I have come to to help people who have been put down.

I have come to show a new way, to  give sight to the blind’.

The Gospel of the Lord

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

We took a few moments to think about people at school and in the wider world who may be treated unfairly and how we could be like Jesus in helping them.

Year 3 had some great suggestions: seeing someone on their own in the playground and asking them to join in a game; giving food to the poor through a food bank; raising money for charity to help others such as the homeless; standing up for someone who they see being treated unfairly, such as people saying unkind things, and getting them some help and showing them kindness.

Maybe you could do one of these things this week and achieve this week’s mission: to stand up for those being treated unfairly.

In year 5, we thought of many ways to stand up for those who are being treated unfairly. We discussed that if you or any other person is being bullied you can stand up by telling them to stop and also telling an adult. We discussed how important sportsmanship is during sport and that your actions are just as important as words when standing up for someone. Lastly, we discussed the word ‘inclusive’ and what it meant. We decided that inclusiveness is so important so that everyone can join in and no-one should be left out.

Year one talked about feeling scared trying to stand up to others. So we discussed how Jesus wants us to make sure everyone is treated fairly and things we could do about it.
Lily had noticed someone teasing one of her friends and she was brave enough to tell them to stop. Well done Lily!

Year 2 have identified this week, friends who have been treated unfairly. In our discussion this week it was mentioned that some children in class had been treated unfairly out on the playground and certain members of the class spoke up and explained to other children, calmly, that their actions were unkind. One of the examples given was that the bench in the playground wasn’t being shared fairly, until it was made clear that the all children need to be kind and share.

This week Year 3 have tried really hard to stand up for those who are being treated unfairly and not to tell tales on each other. During a game of football Quinn asked some children’s to stop being mean to someone who wasn’t playing how they wanted them to. Hugo helped stand up for Hanna when some of the class wanted to swop her for someone else as they didn’t think she playing well enough. Mary stood up for herself and someone to stop talking unkindly to her. We found this mission hard and are going to keep working at it for the next two weeks.

This week some children in Year 4 have been put into a situation where people have treated animals unfairly and they have asked them to stop. Other children have had a sibling who has been unkind to a family member and they asked them to stop and think about how they might be feeling and put themselves in the other person’s position.
