Mission: To be resilient when facing challenges by having faith in God

Our word of the week is “Challenge”.

We looked at the story of David and Goliath, when David faced the, literally, huge challenge of defeating Goliath. However, he overcame this challenge as he put his faith in God.

We do not have a Goliath to battle, so we talked about the challenges that we face in our lives:

  • when our schoolwork is tricky
  • when we disagree with our friends
  • when we are trying to get better at sport
  • when we are learning to play an instrument
  • when we are learning a new skill
  • when things do not go to plan
  • and lots of other times!

Our lives are full of challenges, so we must be resilient and put our faith in God that we can overcome them.

The two songs we sang echo our mission this week: to be resilient when facing challenges by having faith in God. We sang “Fill me up, Lord” which lyrics urge the Holy Spirit to fill us with the strength to be like Jesus. We finished with “My Lighthouse” which describes how God is “the peace in my troubled sea” which means that by trusting in God, we don’t need to worry as everything will work out if we have faith.

Let us know how you have achieved this week’s mission in the comments below.

This week, we started thinking about challenges by first of all closing our eyes and raising our hand if we had come across a challenge already that week or even that day. Most of the children in year 5 raised their hand. We discussed how challenges are part of our day to day life but it is how we handle them and tackle them that matters. In order to face a challenge year 5 said that you might have to be patient, forgiving and thankful. They discussed that they could ask for help in school if they came across challenges that they would like to talk about. We also spoke about challenges at home such as falling out with our brothers and sisters. We said that we could try seeing the point of view of their brothers or sisters and coming to an agreement.

This week, Year 1 discussed challenges they faced at school or at home. We talked about the people who help us when we find things challenging. Some people said they find writing a challenge, another said making friends could be challenging. We talked about being resilient and never giving up as well as practicing to get better at our challenges. We read Matthew 19:26 and reflected on the reading(with God all things are possible). Faith can help us overcome our challenges.

In Year 4 we talked about the challenges we face at school and at home. We discussed how we can overcome them and ask for support. In class we knew we could ask our partners and the teachers to help us when we are facing a challenging. If we are finding something difficult we can ask our friends to give us advice and show us how to get through. At home our parents are there to support us and guide us through the challenges we face in life. We also discussed how putting our faith and trust in God helps when things get harder for us.

In Year 6 we thought about the challenges we face in every day life; from challenges in school to ones we face in our personal life. We found it reassuring to know that everyone has challenges but we are never on our own when facing them- we have lots of people we can turn to such as teachers, parents, friends and God. We also spoke about how it feels to overcome a challenge and how we can take pride in the times we have succeeded and use that to help us through new challenges.
