Mission: to spend more time with God

As we begin the season of Lent, we are reminded of when Jesus spent 40 days and 40 nights in the desert. He spent a lot of that time in prayer and reflection.

We heard about a time when Jesus taught his followers how to pray.

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

Jesus said to them, “When you pray, say this:

‘Father:

May your holy name be honored;

may your Kingdom come.

Give us day by day the food we need.[a]

Forgive us our sins,

for we forgive everyone who does us wrong.

And do not bring us to hard testing.’”

Luke 11:1-4

During Lent, we should commit to spending more time with God. Some ideas include:

  • Taking the “Our Lenten Journey” pack home to pray with your family
  • Using the spontaneous prayer area in the corridor
  • To complete your “Walk with Me” booklet
  • Using your class prayer box at lunchtime
  • Going to lunchtime meditation club
  • Saying an extra ‘Our Father’ or ‘Hail Mary’ each day

Let us know in the comments below how you achieve this week’s mission: to spend more time with God.

This week, year 5 have spent more time praying, especially for those who are suffering across the world. Some of the year 5 children loved the idea of having a lunch time meditation session and woukd like to continue attending in order to feel closely connected with God.

In Year 4 we are saying ,ore prayers during this time of Lent. We are praying for those in other countries that are suffering and the families of people in our school who are caught up in the war in Ukraine. We have used our new meditation cloth to centre our prayers and thought to God. We have challenged each other to pray everyday in a quiet space as our mission from class liturgy. We have also enjoyed sharing how we have used the ‘Lenten Journey’ pack at home to pray with our families. Some of us have been to lunchtime meditation and enjoyed the quiet thinking time to talk to God.

In Year 3 we spoke about why prayer is important. The children came up with the idea that they would like to pray more during Lent, especially at the moment because of the events in the Ukraine because there are so many people there and around the world who need our prayers. As part of their daily prayers they have been praying the prayer for Ukraine and reading their “Walk with Me” booklet daily.

In Year 1, we talked about how prayer helps us to get closer to God. We spoke about how Jesus taught us to pray and reflected on the Our Father prayer. Prayer is important during lent because it reminds us of God’s forgiveness and love. As a class, we have promised to dedicate time every day to pray for Ukraine and world peace.

In Year 6 we enjoyed setting aside a few moments every day to spend time with God. During this time we focused our prayers on those in need both in our own country and abroad. We especially focused prayers on those suffering in Ukraine at the moment and prayed that there would soon be peace in Europe again. Outside of school, we have enjoyed using the ‘walk with me through lent’ booklets and the travelling Lenten journey pack to be more prayerful at home with our families.

Year 2 have been spending more time at prayer over Lent and have shared a lovely prayer together for the people of Ukraine. When discussing how we can spend more time with God, the children came up with quiet meditation, speaking a prayer aloud or in your head and talking to God about your day before bed.
