Mission: to undertake a small act of sacrifice

This week, as we edge nearer to the joyous season of Easter, we considered the death and resurrection of Jesus.

This week we will be thinking about the sacrifice that Jesus made for us. His death and resurrection are at the heart of our faith and they are the reason that we have our school and our Church today. We are called to make sacrifices too, not necessarily to give our lives, but maybe to give our time, or our love or our compassion.

Let us know in the comments below how you achieve this week’s mission: to undertake a small act of sacrifice.

Year 4 talked about why they are sacrificing their time to do a sponsored run, that in giving up their time they could help others. We also talked about that making sacrifices doesn’t have to be a hardship. We can give up a bit of our game or television time to help around the home but still have some time to play. We can share our time with our friends and that doesn’t mean we like the, any the less for playing with someone else. We decided that small sacrifices in the end can have big benefits for all those involved.

This week, year 5 have been telling me about the little sacrifices that they have made. These included, sacrificing eating junk food in order to show that we are grateful for Jesus’ sacrifice. A lot of year 5’s also gave up their time to do different things such as visiting their elderly relatives and litter picking.
Not only did we speak about sacrificing things, but we also spoke about things that we could do to show unity within our families. Some spoke about how they have tried to argue less with their siblings and others spoke about doing more chores to help their parents.

The children in Year 3 spoke about some of the things they had been doing throughout the week as a small sacrifice. Some of these things included taking time out from playing their electronic games/watching television to sort through their toys and clothes that they don’t use ay more, then give these to those less fortunate. Some of the children also sacrificed their time to talk to God, through prayer.

This week, the children in Year 1 have talked about the word sacrifice and what it means. They have been able to relate more to this theme with their learning about Jesus sacrificing his life for us on Good Friday in our RE lesson . As a class, we spoke about what we were willing to sacrifice . Some of the things the children talked about were taking out time to pray, helping mum and dad and giving out their toys to children who have less.

In Year 2, we discussed the sacrifice that both God and Jesus made for us and read the Good Friday story from the Bible. We then went on to discuss how we can sacrifice something to help others or to show our love for others. We came up with sacrificing some of our free time to help with chores or to support our siblings with their homework.

In Year 6 we discussed Sacrifice as part of our RE topic when we learned about Good Friday and also in our class liturgy. As a class we discussed different things we could sacrifice such as pocket money, food and our toys/clothes to help others. We decided, however, that one of the most important things we could sacrifice was our time to help others. We said we could spend time litter picking, volunteering, helping our family or by making sure we make time to pray and attend church.
