Year 34 led us in a beautiful liturgy to celebrate the feast of Pentecost this week. They thought carefully about the signs, symbols and meaning of the ‘Birthday of the Church’ and helped us to understand the importance of the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
Three of the girls created a dance to symbolise the Spirit moving in the world, using coloured scarves to demonstrate that although we cannot see Him, like the wind moving the fabric, we can see the Spirit by the effect He has in the world. Violet explained that the air was moving the fabric, we could not see it but it made their actions beautiful and joyful, like the Holy Spirit does for us.
The children shared the scripture from Acts 2 about the coming of the Holy Spirit and explained that we can’t do anything on our own, it is the power of the Holy Spirit who helps us to have the courage and strength to follow Jesus no matter how hard it is.
Next, the demonstrated the power of the Holy Spirit to help us understand and spread the Good News of Jesus by saying “God loves you” in lots of different languages – including Welsh, Polish, Ukranian and Tamil. The language changes but the message is always the same.
The Year 12 children really enjoyed the Liturgy. N said that she enjoyed the dance and it helped her to understand that the Holy Spirit is always with us and helping us. D wanted to learn how to say God loves you in different languages so that he could share it with lots of different people. S said that it made him really happy that the Holy Spirit would always help him when he was feeling worried or scared. I found the litany of God loves you incredibly moving. It is such a simple message but is the foundation of everything that we believe as Catholics.
