This week, we had a special assembly about water from Severn Trent. We learned that the water on Earth today is the same water and the same amount of water as has existed on Earth since before the time of the dinosaurs. The speaker asked us to take care of the water and to only use the water that we really needed. The whole school thought about this and made promises to do things like turn the tap off when we are brushing our teeth, have a short shower instead of a long one and if we have a bath to only fill it half full – or even better have a shower instead.
This made Year 3 and 4 think about the words of Pope Francis, We must care for our common home’ . We are stewards of creation. There are people who cannot get clean water and the children want to make sure – by putting a few pence in the CAFOD box when we can afford it – that everyone can have safe water to drink. If there will never be any more water than there is now, we have a duty to preserve it and cherish it as we must do with all of God’s creation.
They also discussed how water is used in the sacrament of Baptism to wash away Original Sin and as a symbol of beginning our new lives as Christians. This makes water even more precious. We realised that the water that was used to baptise Jesus is still in the world today. What an amazing thought!
