Mission: To help others

In today’s assembly, we heard about how God created our beautiful world. The chaplains then shared what they had learnt from attending last week’s CAFOD National Assembly on climate change.

They explained what climate change is, the impact it has on people around the world and all about an important event happening in the UK this year called COP26.

They also set everyone a mission. Every child has been given a pair of eyes to decorate with how they want the world to be. The children were asked to think about how they could protect the planet in order for it to stay a green and beautiful place where everyone has what they need to live happily.

These eyes will form a big display in our hall and we will Tweet these to CAFOD and to our government to urge them to take action at COP26 to save our wonderful home – Planet Earth.

We ended our assembly with a prayer from Pope Francis’ Laudato Si:

A prayer for the Earth

All powerful God,
you are present in the universe
and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love,
that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with your peace, that we may live
as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
O God of the poor,
help us to rescue the abandoned
and forgotten of this earth,
so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives,
that we may protect the world and not prey on it,
that we may sow beauty,
not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts
of those who look only for gain
at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,
to be filled with awe and contemplation,
to recognize that we are profoundly united
with every creature
as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle,
for justice, love and peace.

How will you protect our planet and achieve this week’s mission to help those in trouble because of climate change? Let us know in the comments below.

In year 3 we have been doing a lot to help the planet. Aoife has been picking up litter near her horses and we have been making sure all rubbish goes in the bin at school. At home we have been recycling our rubbish and trying to use less plastic. Adam has been helping to plant new trees in his garden and Rayleigh is planting seeds to grow her own vegetables. At school we have been helping each other to complete our work, we have also been helping our reading partners to read new texts.

This week Year 2 have helped their friends when they have fallen and hurt themselves. On two separate occasions, children have made their friends comfortable on the playground floor by providing coats to make them feel both safe and warm.

In Year 1 we have helped each other when one of the children fell over, by putting away the lunchtime equipment, by helping mum bake cookies, one child helped a parent when she had a cast on her arm and we all helped each other with our work. We have also thought about how we can help people affected by climate change and have coloured in a pair of eyes which shows that we are watching what is happening at the climate change meeting.

This week Year 4 have helped others when they saw that they were sad and they tried to cheer them up. They helped their siblings or friends when they fell over and one child called their mum for help because they realised that their little brother was trying to climb out of his cot. Another child has tried to help animals by picking up litter so that the animals don’t choke on it.

In Foundation Stage we talked about helping others and being kind. We thought the best thing to do was to say kind words and tell an adult if someone is in trouble.
We have been thinking about how we can look after our environment by all helping to keep our classroom and playground clean and tidy.

In Year 6 we spoke about our responsibility to look after the each other and the planet as we are all part of God’s creation. To help others when they are in trouble we said we could stand up for our friends, be fair to everyone and comfort each other. We also spoke about how we can look after our planet when it is in trouble by being good Stewards of Creation. This means we understand we have to look after the Earth God gave us on a small scale such as by recycling, litter picking, reusing bottles and also on a larger scale like taking part in CAFODs Eyes on the World project.

In year 5, we have been discussing many ways to help others when they are in trouble. Some of these include actions such as, helping someone when they fall over, raising money for charities that help those in need, helping others cross safely over the road and standing up for those that are being bullied by others. We also discussed what we could do if the planet was in trouble. We thought about ways to look after the planet such as litter picking and recycling.
