Mission: to show mercy and compassion to others

Today’s Act of Worship began with a prayer, written and led by Josh, our Year 5 chaplain.

Dear Jesus,

Help us to forgive people who upset us and take care of them when they most need it.  Guide us towards your light so that you may take us into your hands and teach us to be better people.

Amen

Mrs Beer then introduced this week’s word: Mercy. She explained that to show mercy is to be kind and caring to those who may have upset us or been unkind to us.

We heard a story of mercy from the Bible: The Good Samaritan.

Luke 10:30-37 | Lesson, Jesus, Change me

Mrs Beer reminded us that we too can be like the Good Samaritan and show mercy and compassion for those people we might not like or be friends with.

Our chaplains had some ideas of how we could do this:

  • We could forgive people who upset us
  • We could love people by being kind such as to our teachers by tidying up for them
  • We could play with people we don’t usually play with
  • We can give people who aren’t our friends, a smile
  • We could pray for people who are sick, especially those with coronavirus

Let us know in the comments below how you achieve this week’s mission: to show mercy and compassion to others.

This week, year 5 spoke about what we could do to show mercy and compassion towards others. We shared ideas such as helping someone out who is struggling with their school work, encouraging someone to join in a game if they are looking left out and even just being a good listener for someone who needs to be listened to. We spoke about the importance of showing compassion in the world and how showing compassion to someone can make such a positive difference in a person’s life.

This week in Year 1, We led a lovely liturgy that encouraged us to think about how we can be merciful and show mercy. We thought about the different ways that showing mercy can take – for example, showing kindness and compassion to others and also being willing to forgive one another. We made a class pledge to be kind to each other and forgive when our friends hurt us.

In Year 4 we talked about how we could be compassionate and merciful towards each other. We said we could forgive and show kindness to those who have hurt us with actions or words. We would show compassion to those who are feeling unwell and are sad or unhappy by talking to them, getting them help and caring for them. We will show compassion by donating to those who are now homeless and in a new country due to the problems in Ukraine.
