The God who Speaks

This morning Year 7 students from across all six houses met with Naomi from the diocesan youth team based at The Briars, who has been visiting all our schools across the diocese to deliver copies of St Matthew’s Gospel. This is a special gift for students to mark the launch the Church’s special year of focus on the Bible called “The God Who Speaks”.

Pope Francis asks us to read part of the Gospel every day so that we can listen to Jesus at all times. Throughout the year 2020 as part of the initiative “The God Who Speaks”. the Bishops of England and Wales invite all of us to join them in reading St Matthew’s Gospel, just a few verses each day.

Once the copies were presented, students showed Naomi some specific places where we can encounter Christ in our school, eg welcoming our visitors firstly at reception where we read Jesus’ words which are are school mission: “May they all be One.” Then she visited our Chapel where we gather to share the Holy Eucharist, and finally our Library where we honour God’s word in the book of the Gospels housed in our special Evangelarium. Obviously we also know that we are called to encounter Christ and bring Christ to each other in all our encounters with each other day by day everywhere in school.

What will happen next?

Our Gospel Ambassadors will help to distribute the Gospels during our liturgies next week once Fr Simon has blessed them at this week’s Friday Voluntary Mass and hopefully everyone will take up the Pope’s challenge to read a few verses of St Matthew’s Gospel each day.

Thank you James our Chaplain, who organised this special occasion.
