Mission: To find simple things that make us happy

Today, Mrs Beer talked to us about things that make us happy – not big expensive toys or holidays, but everyday things that do not cost any money. We heard this reading:

A reading from the book of Ecclesiastes (11: 8 – 10)

It’s good to be alive

When you are young and when you are old.

No matter how long you live,

There is always something you can find to be happy about.

Enjoy every minute of life, young people, and remember God in everything you do.

The word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

Year 5 were in the hall with Mrs Beer and they gave lots of examples of little things that make them happy: baby brothers and sisters, a hug, a smile, doing something nice for someone, school, takeaway food and drawing. Mrs Beer talked about kicking piles of fallen leaves and looking at the moon in the sky.

We ended by doing the actions to the song “If you’re happy and you know it”. That made us all smile too, so we added music to our list of things that make us happy.

What little things make you happy?

In Foundation Stage we said that big smiles make us happy. We always smile at our friends. Telling jokes and listening to stories make us happy. We are always very happy when Mummy or Daddy or Grandparents pick us up from school.

Year 5 have been looking at simple ways that can make us and others happy without spending any money. They said that teachers make them happy as they help them to learn. Art, drawing, singing, listening to music, praying, being kind and friends make them happy.

This week Year 2 have found that the simple things in life that make us happy are when people just smile at us and offer to help when we are in need of support. Other children shared their thoughts and said that they are happy when they see people being kind to each other and that their friends make them happy.

Year 4 listed lots of simple things that make them happy: sharing jokes at break and lunchtime; playing dodgeball, receiving and giving Christmas cards; saying nice things to someone and watching Christmas films. The children realised that none of these things cost a lot of money and most are free!
