In this week’s assembly, we heard about birds – how there are thousands of different species that all look different, but they are still all birds. We thought about insects too – how some can fly, some crawl, some are big and some are tiny, but they are all still insects.
The same applies to us. Some of us are tall, some have long hair, some have blue eyes, some have black skin, some wear glasses and so on. However, despite our differences, we are all still children of God.
It’s not just physically that we are different – we may support different teams, like to play different games or read different books, but we are all still children of God.
We heard this scripture reading from the letter of St Paul to the Colossians:
You are created by God to be like God.
You are God’s people, his saints. He loves you.
You are all different.
You come from different places,
Speak in different ways, have different customs.
But the important thing is that you are God’s children.
So love one another, help one another,
Be at peace with one another.
And let the love of Jesus fill your hearts and minds.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God
Our mission this week is to make sure that no-one is left out of anything because of our differences. We should, instead, celebrate our incredible diversity and uniqueness.
Let us know in the comments how you get on.

In year 6 we have fulfilled our mission to celebrate our differences by being inclusive and playing with each other during our school trip to Rebound. In school we all play together at break times and help each other in lessons as we appreciate that we are all different and we are all good at different things. We also learned about this mission in our End of Year Mass with Father Gabriel as he spoke to us about loving ourselves and loving each other no matter what.
Despite differences between everyone, year 5 discussed that we should still treat each other fairly and as equals to one another. We show this by allowing everyone to join in games, allow everyone to have an opinion that they can voice and always be themselves without feeling like they should be and act like others.
In year 3 we have worked hard at this weeks mission to love one another despite our differences. We have helped each other to play kindly together at lunchtime and playtime. We have worked with different partners to help each other complete tasks using our own strengths. At home we have played with our brothers and sisters even though we like different toys and television programmes. In class we have let each other talk about we like to do, listened and asked questions to find out more about our differences.
In Year 2 we have discussed how we love one another despite our differences and shared how at home some children have fallen out over toys because they wanted to play different games with the same toys. Year 2 have also played with their friends nicely at lunchtime and listened to each other in class. They have also helped Year 1 during their PE lesson to play games correctly and stay in the correct teams.
The children in Year 4 have thought about each others differences and how God has made us all unique and special. They have discussed ways that we are different and how God loved those around him despite their differences. They have listened to each others opinions when they are playing games or making suggestions and taken on others ideas because they were better than theirs. They have supported others when they were treated unfairly and felt upset because of their differences. They have made sure that children in their class did not feel left out at playtimes by inviting them to play their games.
