This week’s word is ‘fasting’.
We talked about how fasting means to give something up. Often, people give up an item of food such as sweets, chocolate or crisps, but there are other things you could give up too, such as gaming time or watching TV.
We heard this reading:

We understood from this that we fast so that only our Father can see it. We don’t brag about what we are doing nor do so to be better than our friends. We do so to be more like Jesus when he fasted in the desert to spend more time with God.
We said that when we give up gaming or TV, we should do something important with that time, such as play with our brothers and sisters or help our mums and dads. That is this week’s mission.
Let us know how you get on with this week’s mission in the comments below.

In our RE unit on Self Discipline we talked about the meaning of Ash Wednesday and what we are going to give up for Lent. Some of us are giving up biscuits, sweets, crisps or cake. A few of us said we were going to give up our time to help our parents, talk to our grandparents or play with our siblings. Others our going to give some of their pocket money to help those less fortunate.
Year 5 talked about the importance of giving things up and why we do it. Some of them decided to give up their play stations, Roblox or xbox so that they could spend quality time with their families, others decided to give up cake, sweets or ice-cream. They thought it would be a good idea to give up the money they didn’t spend on these treats to CAFOD.
In EYFS we spoke about things that we could do extra during Lent, by giving up their time to help others .The children suggested that they would help their parents with the cooking, tidy their bedrooms, spend more time with their siblings and helping their parents with the shopping.
In Year 6 we discussed Children spending time helping out their parents/brothers and sisters. As we are the older ones in the school we are able to offer more help than younger years and should do this whenever the opportunity presents itself, especially when they means so something for others instead of ourselves.
