| In this week’s assembly, Mrs Beer talked to us about “belonging”. As we start the new academic year, we have new members of our community: new children have joined us, not only in EYFS, but in other classes too. We welcome new staff members: Mrs Chudwudebe and Mrs Price in Year 1, Mr Read, our new sports coach and Mrs Wortley, our new lunchtime supervisor. Our school is a community and it is important that our new community members feel that they belong here at St Clare’s. A feeling of belonging is important. It makes us feel happy and safe so that we can thrive and be the best that we can be. |
| We are also a Catholic community, a community of children of God. In this reading, we hear how St Paul stresses that we are all one, no matter what our differences may be. A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Galatians It is through faith that all of you are God’s children in union with Christ Jesus. You were baptised into union with Christ, and now you are clothed, so to speak, with the life of Christ himself. So there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles, between slaves and free people, between men and women; you are all one in union with Christ Jesus. We made sure that everyone in assembly had a sense of belonging by offering each other a fist bump as a sign of Peace. |
Our weekly mission is to make sure that everyone feels that they belong to the St Clare’s community. How could we do this? The children had some great ideas: – By smiling and saying hello. – By making sure no one is left out at playtime. – By sitting next to someone new at lunchtime. – By talking to new staff members. – By saying hello to visitors. This week, year 5 based their classroom liturgy on belonging. When we discussed what this meant, we came up with many ways a person might feel like they belong such as being asked to join in a game, being greeted with a hello at school and having a family dinner at the table at home. We spoke about our new friend that has recently joined us and hoping that she now feels like she belongs in the year 5 class and that we have made her feel welcome.
This week Year 4 have worked on showing each other how we belong to St. Clare’s. We have asked others to join in our games at playtime and lunchtime. We have encouraged each other in class, sharing resources and ideas giving each other time to speak. We all greeted the bus driver and thanked him after taking us swimming. We have smiled at those who looked unsure and alone. We asked Alfie how we made him feel part of Year 4 this year and he said we talked to him, let him play our games and listened when he had something to say.
This week in Year 1, our class liturgy was based on the theme belonging. We talked about what it means to belong and how we belong to a family and our school community. The children came up with ways we can make people feel loved and promise to be kind, caring, and respectful.
This week, Year 3 talked about they made people feel like they belonged to the Saint Clare’s community by looking after new children that join the class, showing them around school and inviting them to play in their games.
In year 6 we spoke about how we welcome others into our school like our new friend Amber, we asked her how we made her feels welcome and she said we played games with her, made sure she wasn’t lost and helped her if she felt lonely or confused. We also spoke about how to make people feel welcome in the wider community by smiling, showing good manners and being respectful.
Year 2 have discussed the different ways we can include others and show each other how we belong to one school family. We talked about how we ask others to join in during our singing, prayers, learning and games. We also said that we learn from God by following Jesus’s example.
