Mission: To have dialogue with somebody different

This week’s word is dialogue. We talked about how having an effective dialogue means listening really carefully to what the other person is saying and taking into account how they are feeling.

We heard this scripture:

We not only have to listen carefully, with empathy, but must think about what we are going to say before we speak. We must not jump to being angered by the other person’s words.

We talked about the example of mum or dad asking you to help with the washing up after a long day of school. Instead of getting cross, we should think about the hard day our parents have had and just help them.

We talked about the different people you could have a new dialogue with this week: someone in your class that you don’t usually speak to; one of the new EYFS pupils; someone at your club you haven’t spoken to yet.

Let us know in the comments below how you achieve this week’s mission.

This week Year 6 have worked closely on the idea of being good listeners to ensure good dialogue. We should be looking at the person who is talking to give them our full attention. We have worked with new people in our lessons and aimed to have good dialogue with them. Helping them with their work or finding out new things about them.

In Year 2 this week we have used the mission within our lessons to have different talk partners. We have learnt how to listen and wait our turn to ask a question. We have talked about that we need to look at the person who is talking to show that we are listening.

Some of the children have spoken to someone new in the class that they wouldn’t usually talk to. Two of the children looked after a child in the class who attended after school club for the first time yesterday and they talked to him and played with him.

In Year One we talked about how we would try to talk to someone in our class who we don’t usually speak to. We know that Jesus was a good friend to everyone.

In Year 5 this week we embraced the mission of dialogue by making time to speak to people who we don’t usually speak to. In class we worked with different partners and on the playground we tried to include different people in our games. We also spoke about how it is important to talk to lots of different people so we can learn more about the world and different points of view.

This week year 3 discussed how we took time to speak to people we would normally not have the chance to. This included children on the playground from other year groups, adults around school and neighbours/ family outside of school that we do not usually speak to. Miss Kohli gave the example that she had a dialogue with pupils in year 5 and 6 children during the Young Leadership Programme who she would usually not have the opportunity to.

In Year 4 we made dialogue with one another across the week. We held purposeful conversations about this mission with people we usually talk to. We also made a conscious effort to speak to people we do not. We all had new partners on the bus too and from swimming and we made sure that we spoke sensibly on the bus with our new partners. Our new partners were picked by Mr Martin to ensure dialogue with children who do not normally speak to one another. Some children made a purposeful effort to speak to other year groups during their many after school activities.
